Soundscape Phenology of Bats of the Lake Erie Islands

Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center research coordinator Dr. Amy Alford places a bat audio detection device on the light tower of the South Bas Island lighthouse. The lighthouse is owned and operated by Ohio Sea Grant's Stone Laboratory.

Residents of South Bass and Middle Bass Islands install audio monitoring devices on homes and businesses to detect bat species based on their chirps. The data are downloaded occasionally and can be made available to the public to listen to the various species' calls on kiosks inside the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center.
